How to create and configure a custom Subgroup Level Control Test to check for out of control Range values.

While not standard SPC practice, you can check for out of control conditions for your process based on range values.
This is done using a custom Subgroup Level Control Test checking against the Secondary chart.

There are a number of different ways this can be done. The following is 1 potential configuration that may work for you.

  1. Log into WinSPC as an Administrative user, such as the built-in Admin user, or another user with similar privalages.
  2. From the Administrator Window, select File-->New-->Subgroup Level Test
  3. Name this new test something meaningful/relavent, such as 'Range Check' or 'Secondary Chart Test'
  4. In the description, enter a memo that explains what you are going to use this test to do, in this case, test the capability of the seecondary charts in WinSPC.
  5. Set the color to the desired severity color. Red is the default for Out of Control
  6. If you chose Red, you can leave the Caption to default, as the default caption for a red-level-severity violation is 'Out of control' in the upper right-hand corder of the Data Collection ribbon. Otherwise, if you pick a different color, or want a different message, enter it here.
  7. Click on the 'Definition' tab.
  8. For a Test Type: of 'Run', select the following:
  9. Chart Variable: Secondary
  10. Look For: 1
  11. Out Of: 1
  12. In Zone: Beyond A
  13. And: On Either Side
  14. Click 'New'
  15. Click 'OK'

You can now add your new Custom Subgroup Level Control Test to either an existing or new Control Test Template with your choice of Triggers to start checking your R, MR, S and Median charts for out of control conditions.
