What are the recommended operating systems and database servers for WinSPC?
Article Details

Last Updated
5th of January, 2022

Applies to
WinSPC 9.0

The information below represents a list of recommended operating systems and database servers for WinSPC 9.0. Other versions of WinSPC may have different recommended platforms and you will want to refer to your "Installation and Configuration Guide" for the recommended platforms for your specific version.

The absence of an operating system or database server from the list below means that operating system or database server was not tested in DataNet's quality assurance lab. It does not mean that the operating system or database server is known to be incompatible with WinSPC. DataNet will do its best to support installations using configurations other than those listed below.

For any operating system or database server, we recommend using the latest service packs and patches from the appropriate vendor.

If you have any questions regarding support for a specific operating system or database server, please contact our Technical Support.

WinSPC Database Server
WinSPC requires a back-end database to store configuration information and production data collected by WinSPC.

Database Server Operating System:
  • Windows 2019 Server
  • Windows 2016 Server
  • Windows 2012 Server (including R2)
  • Windows 2008 Server (including R2) (32-bit or 64-bit)
Database Server Type/Version:
  • Microsoft SQL Server (all current editions up to and including SQL Server 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019,...)
  • Oracle Database Server (Versions from 9i, 10g, 11g, 12c, 18c and 19c are all supported in various customer installations)
Note: Please refer to the database server vendor's documentation for hardware and operating system requirements for that specific database server (a specific database server may not be compatible with all server operating systems above).

WinSPC Application Server
The WinSPC Application Server is an optional component to the WinSPC system and normally resides on a separate machine.  This server is responsible for performing some server-side operations in the WinSPC system.  Click here to learn more about the WinSPC Application Server.

Application Server Operating System
  • Windows 2019 Server
  • Windows 2016 Server
  • Windows 2012 Server (including R2)
  • Windows 2008 Server (including R2) (32-bit or 64-bit)

WinSPC Client

The WinSPC client is used to configure the WinSPC system, collect data, and report/analyze data that has been collected.  A WinSPC client can either be a standard computer or, if a Terminal Service (thin-client) deployment is used, any device that supports the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

Client Operating System:

  • Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise
  • Windows 8.1 Pro and Enterprise
  • Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise
Terminal Services Server (Remote Desktop Services):
  • Remote Desktop Services on Windows 2019 Server
  • Remote Desktop Services on Windows 2016 Server
  • Remote Desktop Services on Windows 2012 Server (including R2)
  • Terminal Services on Windows 2008 Server (including R2) (32-bit or 64-bit)

Virtualization
Most virtualization solutions should be compatible with WinSPC and its server components.  DataNet extensively uses Amazon AWS and VMWare for virtualization during the development, validation, and support of WinSPC.
