To install WinSPC, you should follow the instructions detailed in the "Installation and Configuration Guide" that comes with your WinSPC installation media (CD or download). This guide will take you step by step through the configuration of the WinSPC database as well as the installation of the WinSPC application.
In general, the WinSPC installation process follows these steps:
- Configuring the database server for WinSPC. These steps vary depending on the database being used (i.e., SQL Server, Oracle). This step involves creating an empty shell database that WinSPC will create the tables and fields in, as well as configuring a database user for WinSPC to use for all database communication.
- Configuring a network shared directory for WinSPC (this is referred to as the ‘Remote directory’). This network share is used to install all the second clients as well as distribute updates to all the clients.
- Running the installer on the first WinSPC client. You should be logged into this machine as a local administrator when you perform this step. This Windows user should also have full access to the remote directory. This will place all the necessary files for the WinSPC installation on this computer.
- Running WinSPC on the first client. WinSPC will then prompt for some basic configuration information, such as how to communicate with the database and the location of the remote directory. It will then proceed to create the necessary tables and fields in the database and update the network directory with the necessary files. Once the installer completes, WinSPC is now installed on this client and should be functional.
- You should run the WinSPC Security utility if there are Windows users that are not local administrators on the computer that need to run WinSPC.
To install additional WinSPC clients:
- On the particular client, log into the client as a local administrator.
- Browse out to the remote directory, and run the ‘WinSPCinstall.exe’ to install WinSPC on that client. WinSPC is now installed on this client and should be functional.
- You should run the WinSPC Security utility if there are Windows users that are not local administrators on the computer that need to run WinSPC
If you are installing WinSPC 8.3.0 or later, you can also install the optional WinSPC Application Server component.
